Fevers
What is a fever anyway? If you put a pot on the stove and heat it up, then you can see that everything is moving faster. And that is what a fever does. All the reactions in the body that protect us move faster. Our “army” speeds up the fight against what has attacked us. My most memorable realization was sitting in a class in Naturopathic College and having the professor explain vaccinations.
Although I grew up in my godfather’s chiropractic clinic I still had been firmly indoctrinated by drug companies that it was drugs that kept us safe. So imagine my surprise when I finally really “got” it that it is really really really our own bodies that carry the fight. We have an army – our immune system – and the job of that system is to kill what would cause us harm. We even have cells called Natural Killer cells – is that cool or what!? And to think, people have been around for many many years before a bunch of drugs.
By the way the second time we see a particular invader, our fighting starts faster, which is actually the theory behind vaccinations, in that the vaccine would be the 1st exposure, so later the body would react faster. Might be okay, if there wasn’t so much awful stuff in the vaccine, and if they always knew who the invader was going to be. Alas that mistake is made often.
Something for another article, stay tuned…
But the point being – it is your body, my body, your child’s body that carries the fight. And a fever carries the fight faster. So to bring down a fever too soon really interferes with the fight.
Is there a point to be concerned regarding your child’s temperature? Sure. And you should have that conversation with the person you have assisting you with your child’s health. There is not an always, or never on this. And respect the body, assist it and for heavens’ sake, don’t get in it’s way.
The best prevention is to do all the healthy things first. You boost your immune system.
